PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
April brought on another successful month for NAIOP’s New York City Chapter. As the weather gets nicer I hope that more of our NAIOP members are encouraged to join us at the various events we have planned for the spring and summer months.
In early April NAIOP NYC members joined New York City Council Member Dan Garodnick, legislative author of the City’s first Green Energy Code, at the Breakfast Series event “Greening New York City,” held at the Haworth Showroom on Park Avenue.

Recap: NAIOP NYC Breakfast Series: Greening New York City

On April 11, 2012 NAIOP members and non-members gathered at the Haworth Showroom on Park Avenue for the monthly Breakfast Series to discuss the important issue of “Greening of New York City” as well as sustainable construction and development. New York City Council Member Dan Garodnick, author of legislation such as the Tenant Protection Act and the City's first Green Energy Code, opened the event with his perspective on the City's achievements and opportunities to improve conservation and green space. A panel discussion followed moderated by Code Green Solutions Managing Director Christopher Cayten, who represents building owners on energy efficiency upgrade and renewable energy projects including cogen and solar power systems. Panelists included: Lou Nowikas of Corporate Real Estate & Facilities Planning, Asif Syed of AKF Engineers, Nathan Taft of Jonathan Rose Companies and Stacy Lee of the New York City Mayor's Office of Long-Term Planning.
Member of the Month
We interviewed Alan S. Cohen, Partner at Cooley LLP, as our May 2012 Member of the month. Alan sits on the NAIOP NYC Executive Committee as the Chapter secretary and has participated in various NAIOP events both locally and nationally including our successful NAIOP National Conference in Washington, D.C. in February. Alan has been a member of NAIOP for three years.
Tell us about your involvement in NAIOP NYC.
I have been a member of NAIOP NYC for over three years. Initially, I attended monthly Board meetings and enjoyed hearing about the NAIOP agenda and actions taken, both nationally and locally, to achieve results on issues facing the real estate community. In 2010, I became a member of the Membership Committee and helped to focus its agenda and work with the other committee members to develop new methods and programs to attract new members, and to enhance the value of being a member. I have continued to become more active in the Chapter. My law firm became a sponsor of NAIOP and hosted a number of Board meetings and special events and I was asked to participate in discussions and strategy sessions regarding the Chapter generally and to work with our colleagues nationally to advocate on behalf of the real estate industry. In 2012, I attended CLLR 2012 in Washington, D.C., and participated in “Capitol Hill Day,” which was a tremendous experience meeting with our elected representatives serving NY State. I also was elected the Chapter’s Corporate Secretary and a member of the Executive Committee.
What is the most challenging aspect of your position?
As the liaison between the Chapter’s Membership Committee and the Executive Committee/Board, it is often very challenging, working with the Membership Committee, to create new strategies for both attracting new members to the Chapter and retaining existing members year to year. The Chapter offers excellent programming to real estate professionals, featuring recognized leaders of the financial, brokerage and development industries in NYC, and makes these programs available to members and non-members alike. Another challenge is working with Chapter leadership to achieve the proper balance between enhancing the “value” of membership – such as offering discount attendance at these programs, and invitations to roundtable discussions and private tours of private and public developments – while continuing to provide programming and resources to the general real estate community.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I received is to limit the number of organizations in which you become involved professionally and, with respect to each such organization, devote as much time, and become active, at the highest level possible. This has helped me make significant and meaningful contributions, and has maximized the value of my networking activities.
What is the last book you read?
“Played Their Hearts Out”, by George Dohrmann. An excellent insight into the world of AAU athletics (basketball) and the challenges, pitfalls and abuses of promising athletes by manipulative and greedy coaches and recruiters.
Who is your favorite Superhero?
Adam West’s Batman (the original TV Batman, for those DL members who may not have heard of him). Hysterical, over-dramatic, corny, hilarious, philosophic, ridiculous and had the best vocabulary of any Superhero. He was the Captain Kirk (William Shatner) of Superheroes.
What do you wish you had studied in school but did not?
Filmmaking, media, journalism and communications; essentially, ways of turning creative thoughts into finished products.
